Mariah Carey reportedly in 'serious talks' to become an 'American Idol' judge

Now that Jennifer Lopez officially announced her exit from "American Idol" on July 13 and Steven Tyler announced his departure on July 12, the competition reality series is in need of some new big names to sit at the judge's table and, according to reports, the show might get one of the biggest names in show business.

Mariah Carey is reportedly in "serious talks" to become an "American Idol" judge, according to People magazine. The 42-year-old singer is "in play," an insider reportedly told the news outlet.

Randy Jackson, who is one of the original judges from the series, has worked with Carey in the past. He has produced and co-wrote several of her songs as well as played bass for the singer during her tours and in the studio.

Lopez's spokesperson confirmed on July 13 that the singer and actress will not return to "American Idol" next season, shortly after the star told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show that she felt like it was time to move on.

"I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I've put kind of on hold because I love 'Idol' so much," Lopez said. "It just feels like we had an amazing run."

Lopez and Tyler, singer of the band Aerosmith, joined the series in 2010 and have served as co-judges alongside veteran cast member Randy Jackson for the past two seasons. The former two were cast on the show soon after the departure of the show's most famous judge and co-creator, Simon Cowell, as well as Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres.

Tyler announced on Thursday that he is leaving his "mistress" "American Idol" to focus on his work with his "first love" - his rock group, which is currently touring and is set to release a new album in November.
