In a meeting of stadium-sized comeback efforts, the recently reunited No Doubt will join Mariah Carey at a performance scheduled for New York's Rockefeller Plaza to kick off the 2012 NFL season on Sept. 5.
No Doubt has been riding a wave of publicity since the release of its comeback single "Settle Down," and the band's album "Push and Shove" will be released a few weeks after the performance, on Sept. 25. Carey also released a new single "Triumphant" at the beginning of this month, which came after the announcement that she join the judges' panel on "American Idol"after the departures of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
Carey's fellow pop-star-turned-singing-judge, Cee Lo Green of "The Voice," will also pay tribute to pigskin with a new song he recorded for the NFL Network's Thursday night games, "I Love Football."
The song is said to be set to the tune of the Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" and viewers will be encouraged to submit videos of their own performances of the song. No word as to whether Green will weigh in on the quality of the performances.
The news marks a return of sorts to football-adjacent performing for all three of the artists. Carey performed the national anthem at the 2002 Super Bowl, and Cee Lo was part of the surreal Madonna fantasia during halftime of this year's game, which was marred by some controversy regarding an obscene gesture from singer M.I.A., who was also performing.
The NFL season begins Sept. 6.
