Mariah Carey finalizing 'American Idol' deal

Mariah Carey could be a judge on American Idol sooner than you think.

The pop diva is putting the finishing touches on her contract to become a judge on the singing competition. Shell earn more than $17 million for one season if her deal goes through. Thats more than Britney Spearss reported $15 million paycheck for X Factor.

Last week brought bad news for Idol. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler left the show after two years as judges. Carey was on top of mind as soon as they exited.

Her husband Nick Cannon wasnt so sure if Idol could afford his talented wife.

I dont know if they can afford Mariah Carey, he told TMZ. Thats a lot of money.

Idol might have to make some adjustments if they want Carey to judge. She was considered for the 10th season in 2012 after the show originally nixed J. Lo.

If Carey is officially signed, producers have another big decision to make. Finding another judge is their next move. Everyone from Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry has been suggested to fill the void.
