Mariah Carey to be named icon

Singer Mariah Carey will officially be able to claim the title of icon, well once September 7 comes that is.

Broadcast Music Inc., or BMI, has announced that Mariah Carey will be honored as a BMI icon at the 2012 BMI Urban Awards at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. The annual star-studded event focuses on songwriters, producers, and publishers of the music industrys most popular music.

MariahCarey announced that she will join the ranks of previous BMI Urban award winners including The Jacksons, Snoop Dogg, James Brown, Al Green, The Bee Gees, Dolly Parton, and many more. Just like the company she will join, Carey has established herself as a music superstar. She has co-written all of her biggest hits such as, Always Be My Baby, Fantasy, Hero, Shake It Off, and We Belong Together, just to mention a few.

Throughout the years Carey has won multiple Grammy Awards and has scored more number one hits than any other solo artist in history. In the all- genre, all-performer record books she is second, only to the Beatles. According to Rolling Stone Carey is the highest- selling female artist of in history.

Along with presenting Carey her award, the BMI Awards will also include a Mariah Carey musical tribute.
