Mariah Carey Hires Security to Protect Her from Nicki Minaj

Mariah Carey

The new season of "American Idol" is off to a rough start as judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj began a war with each other. Tapes leaked of Minaj cursing out the pop diva and she was also overheard threatening to shoot Carey if she had a gun. With all the threats and tension on the set of the show, Carey announced she had hired extra security to protect her from the volatile star.

With all the drama surrounding two of the judges, here is why the entire situation is bad for "American Idol."

The Competition

The reason that "American Idol," and shows like it, exists is to find the next big star. The competition on the show surrounds musicians from all over the world trying to win over the judges and the fans watching at home. However, right now all the talk is over the competition between Carey and Minaj, two people who are supposed to be impartial judges.

If there is controversy and tension between contestants, that makes the show fun and exciting for fans voting for their favorite musical hopefuls. When the controversy is between two judges, no one is talking about the contestants vying for the contract. Sure, Simon Cowell was overbearing at times, but even with him it was all about the singers.

The Season

If Minaj and Carey are already at each other's throats, and Minaj already wants to kill the pop diva, how can they realistically make it through an entire season of the show? Carey sent the tapes to Barbara Walters, who spoke about it on Oct. 4 on "The View." Minaj responded with a twitter rant against Carey.

Meanwhile, Keith Urban sits between them wondering what he got himself into and Randy Jackson dreams of days with Paula Abdul. If the fighting continues, there is no choice but for the producers of "American Idol" to step in and do something about it. They either have to censor both stars or remove one from the show. If they don't step in quick, this season of "American Idol" might end up as Armageddon for the popular reality series.
